La pierre de Rosetta est une stèle granodiorite inscrite avec un décret délivré à Memphis en 196 avant J.-C. au nom du roi Ptolémée V. Le décret apparaît dans trois scripts: le texte supérieur est les anciens hiéroglyphes égyptiens, la partie médiane du script démotique et le plus bas Grec ancien . Parce qu'il présente essentiellement le même texte dans les trois scripts, il a fourni la clé de la compréhension moderne des hiéroglyphes égyptiens. Bien qu'il soit censé avoir été exposé à l'origine dans un temple, peut-être à proximité du Sais, la pierre a probablement été déplacée pendant la période chrétienne ou médiévale ancienne et a finalement été utilisée comme matériau de construction dans la construction du fort Julien près de la ville de Rashid dans le Delta du Nil. Il a été redécouvert en 1799 par un soldat, Pierre-François Bouchard, de l'expédition napoléonienne en Egypte. Alors que le premier texte bilingue d'Egypte ancienne récupéré dans les temps modernes, la pierre de Rosetta a suscité un intérêt public répandu avec son potentiel pour déchiffrer cette langue ancienne jusqu'alors non traduite. Des copies lithographiques et des moules de plâtre ont commencé à circuler parmi les musées et les universitaires européens.
