Le mot spastique est utilisé différemment en fonction de l'emplacement géographique de son utilisation et de la version de la langue anglaise utilisée, ce qui a entraîné une certaine controverse et une mauvaise compréhension de la nature et de la pertinence du mot. Derivé par le latin des spastikos grecs, le mot à sa racine se réfère encore à une altération du tonus musculaire affectée par la spasticité de la condition médicale, qui se manifeste dans la diplegie spastique et de nombreuses autres formes de paralysie cérébrale et aussi dans des termes tels que «côlon spastique ". Dans cet usage, qui est encore aujourd'hui l'environnement principal du mot, le mot spastic n'a absolument aucune connotation négative, car il décrit avec précision la condition. En Inde, The Spastics Society of India, une organisation à but non lucratif et non gouvernementale, a conservé son nom pendant de nombreuses années sans être critiqué. Colloquialement, le mot spastique peut être, mais n'est pas nécessairement péjoratif; En grande partie, cela dépend de savoir si l'on comprend le mot tel qu'il est utilisé aux États-Unis ou au Royaume-Uni.
