Le système somatosensoriel est un système sensoriel complexe. Il est composé d'un certain nombre de récepteurs différents, y compris les thermorécepteurs, les photorécepteurs, les mécanorécepteurs et les chimiorécepteurs. Il comprend également des centres de traitement essentiels, ou des modalités sensorielles, comme la proprioception, la mécanoréception, la thermoception et la nociception. Les récepteurs sensoriels couvrent la peau et les épithéliums, les muscles squelettiques, les os et les articulations, les organes internes et le système cardiovasculaire. Alors que le toucher est considéré comme l'un des cinq sens traditionnels, l'impression de toucher est formée à partir de plusieurs modalités, y compris la pression, l'étirement de la peau, les vibrations et la température. En médecine, le terme familier «toucher» est généralement remplacé par «des sens somatiques» pour mieux refléter la variété des mécanismes impliqués. Les sens somatiques sont parfois appelés sens somestéres, étant entendu que la somésithérapie inclut le toucher, la proprioception et la perception haptique.
