Tokamak
Un tokamak est un dispositif utilisant un champ magnétique pour confiner un plasma sous la forme d'un tore. L'obtention d'un équilibre stable du plasma nécessite des lignes de champ magnétique qui se déplacent autour du tore sous une forme hélicoïdale. Un tel champ hélicoïdal peut être généré en ajoutant un champ toroïdal et un champ poloïdal. Dans un tokamak, le champ toroïdal est produit par des électroaimants qui entourent le tore, et le champ poloïdal est le résultat d'un courant électrique toroïdal qui s'écoule à l'intérieur du plasma. Ce courant est induit dans le plasma avec un deuxième ensemble d'électroaimants. Le tokamak est l'un des nombreux types de dispositifs de confinement magnétique et est l'un des candidats les plus recherchés pour produire une puissance de fusion thermonucléaire contrôlée. Les champs magnétiques sont utilisés pour l'enfouissement car aucun matériau solide ne résiste à la température extrêmement élevée du plasma. Une alternative au tokamak est le stellarator. Les Tokamaks ont été inventés dans les années 1950 par les physiciens soviétiques Igor Tamm et Andrei Sakharov, inspirés par une idée originale d'Oleg Lavrentiev.
