En biologie, le genre est un groupe dans la classification des organismes vivants qui ont plus d'une espèce en termes de morphologie. Dans la nomenclature binomiale régulière, le nom de l'organisme est composé de ses spécificateurs de genre et d'espèce. Par exemple Homo sapiens, le nom d'une espèce humaine appartenant au genre Homo. Voir la classification scientifique pour les détails de ce système. Type genre "Type Genre" pour le taxon est le premier genre à être nommé et représenté. Famille et, chez les plantes, tous les taxons de la division biologique sont nommés selon le genre. Les spécimens utilisés pour cette espèce sont stockés comme holotype dans le musée zoologique ou l'herbier pour un examen plus approfondi. Le nom du genre dans un univers peut être le même que le nom du genre ou d'un autre taxon dans un autre monde. Par exemple, Anura est un genre de plantes et aussi une règle de grenouille; Aotus est une noix et un singe.
