Gnose - une forme de conscience religieuse qui met l'accent sur la valeur de la connaissance en tant que moyen de salut. La mythologie gnostique dépeint un être humain endormi dans un rêve - s'éveiller à cela, c'est connaître la vérité sur sa vocation spirituelle. Le terme fait le plus souvent référence aux mouvements religieux de l'Antiquité tardive et du début du Moyen Age. Parmi eux se trouvent deux courants principaux: la gnose moniste, dont le point culminant est le christianisme valencien, et le dualisme du type manichéisme iranien. La caractéristique essentielle de la vision du monde gnostique est la croyance en la chute de l'Esprit et en l'emprisonnement dans le monde. Dans la gnose moniste, le monde, compris comme un être matériel, est la dernière, la plus faible émanation de Dieu, la place du mal et de la souffrance dans laquelle l'homme est venu vivre. Le mal, la désintégration et la mort sont le résultat de la chute divine originelle. Un homme, un être doué de l'étincelle de l'esprit, est chargé de réparer cette erreur. La tâche de l'illuminé sur le chemin de la gnose est de libérer les étincelles de l'Esprit et de les donner à Dieu.

Gnoza – forma świadomości religijnej podkreślająca wartość wiedzy jako narzędzia zbawienia. Mitologia gnostycka przedstawia człowieka jako pogrążonego we śnie – obudzenie z niego to poznanie prawdy o swoim duchowym powołaniu. Terminem tym najczęściej określa się ruchy religijne późnego antyku i wczesnego średniowiecza. Wśród nich wyróżnić można dwa główne nurty: gnozę monistyczną, której szczytowe osiągnięcie stanowi chrześcijański walentynianizm, oraz dualistyczną gnozę typu irańskiego – manicheizm. Zasadniczą cechą światopoglądu gnostycznego jest przekonanie o upadku Ducha i uwięzieniu w świecie. W gnozie monistycznej świat – rozumiany jako byt materialny, ów padół zła i cierpienia, w którym przyszło człowiekowi żyć – jest ostatnią, najniższą emanacją Boga. Zło, rozpad i śmierć zaistniały w wyniku pierwotnego boskiego upadku. Człowiek, istota obdarzona iskrą ducha, obarczony jest odpowiedzialnością naprawy tego błędu. Zadaniem oświeconego na ścieżce gnozy jest uwalnianie iskier Ducha i oddawanie ich Bogu.
