Maputo est la capitale du Mozambique, située dans la partie sud du pays et en même temps une province séparée. Maputo est situé sur la rive ouest de la baie du même nom, à l'embouchure de la rivière Tembe. La baie mesure 95 km de long et 30 m de large, à l'extrémité sud de la baie se trouve l'embouchure de la rivière Maputo. Population: 1 149 666 Maputo est un port de l'océan Indien. L'infrastructure portuaire urbaine moderne se concentre sur la vie économique de la ville. Les principaux produits d'exportation passant par le port de Maputo sont le charbon, le coton, le sucre, le chrome, le sisal, le coprah et le bois. La ville produit du ciment, de la poterie, des meubles, des chaussures et des produits en caoutchouc. Maputo possède également une grande usine de fonderie d'aluminium. La ville a été fondée à la fin du dix-huitième siècle sous le nom de Lourenço Marques, en l'honneur du marchand portugais qui a découvert la région dans l'année 1544. Le développement dynamique de la ville remonte à 1895, quand il a été relié à la ligne de chemin de fer de Pretoria en Afrique du Sud. La plus grande gare de la ville est Maputo. En 1907, Lourenço Marques devient la capitale de l'Afrique orientale portugaise.

W mieście wytwarzany jest cement, wyroby garncarskie, meble, buty, a także wyroby gumowe. W Maputo znajduje się również duży zakład wytopu aluminium. Miasto założone zostało pod koniec XVIII wieku pod nazwą Lourenço Marques, na cześć portugalskiego kupca, który odkrył te tereny w roku 1544. Dynamiczny rozwój miasta datuje się od 1895 roku, kiedy zostało połączone linią kolejową z Pretorią w Afryce Południowej. Największą stacją kolejową miasta jest Maputo. W 1907 roku Lourenço Marques zostało stolicą Portugalskiej Afryki Wschodniej.
