Transit, également NAVSAT, NNSS - le premier système de navigation par satellite en service. Initialement utilisé par l'US Navy pour déterminer la position des sous-marins avec des missiles balistiques Polaris, plus tard par des navires de surface, et en 1967, il a été mis à la disposition des utilisateurs civils. Il a été utilisé entre autres. en navigation et à des fins hydrographiques et géodésiques. Le système a été développé par Applied Physics Laboratory, une partie de l'Université Johns Hopkins sur ordre de l'US Navy. Les premiers essais réussis ont été faits en 1960, en 1964 Transit est entré en service. Les satellites sont placés sur des orbites polaires en orbite basse à une altitude d'environ 1100 km au-dessus de la surface de la Terre. La période de circulation du satellite autour de la Terre était d'environ 106 minutes. Une constellation de cinq satellites était nécessaire pour assurer une couverture mondiale. Pendant le fonctionnement normal du système en orbite, 10 satellites ont été maintenus. En raison de ses lacunes, le système de transit a été remplacé par GPS et a cessé ses activités en 1996, bien que ses satellites étaient encore utilisés à d'autres fins.
