Flotazione è un processo di separazione fisico-chimica per i solidi a grana fine grazie alla diversa bagnabilità delle particelle. In tal modo, si utilizza il fatto che le bolle di gas possono facilmente diventare idrofobiche, h. che sono difficili da bagnare dall'acqua e che danno la galleggiabilità delle particelle in modo che galleggiano. Il presupposto è che il gas utilizzato si scioglie in acqua. In queste condizioni, le bolle di gas idrofobiche si accumulano anche sulle superfici di particelle idrofobiche. Il metodo viene utilizzato, ad esempio, nella miniera per separare il minerale e la gangue in una slurry acquosa. Ha sostituito la rimozione tradizionale dei fanghi nella maggior parte dei campi di applicazione. La flottazione non appartiene ai processi di separazione dovuti alla densità, come viene spesso assunto erroneamente. Secondo la definizione secondo il codice unitario VDMA 24430, è un processo di separazione in cui le sostanze disperse o sospese in acqua vengono trasportate sulla superficie dell'acqua aderendo le bolle di gas e vengono rimosse con un dispositivo di compensazione.
