Un ventilatore è una macchina a flusso esternamente guidata, che solitamente trasmette e comprime un mezzo gassoso mediante un rotore che ruota in una custodia, ottenendo così un rapporto di pressione tra 1 e 1,1 tra il lato di aspirazione e il lato di pressione. Le macchine con un rapporto di pressione compreso tra 1,1 e 3 sono soffiatori. I ventilatori e le soffianti sono anche denominati ventilatori, in particolare quando sono previsti per l'estrazione dell'aria. Nel senso più ampio, tutti sono contati come compressori. Compressori in senso stretto, dall'altro, ottengono rapporti di pressione di oltre 3. In relazione alla prestazione, i ventilatori ottengono flussi di volume elevati a causa del rapporto di bassa pressione, i ventilatori hanno flusso di volume medio a causa del rapporto pressione media.
