La grammatica del latino, come quella di altre antiche lingue indoeuropee, è altamente inflected; Di conseguenza, consente una grande flessibilità nella scelta dell'ordine delle parole. Per esempio, femina togam texuit, "la donna wove a toga", che è l'ordine preferito di parola, potrebbe essere espresso come texuit togam femina o togam texuit femina. In ogni parola il suffisso: -a, -am e -uit, e non la posizione della frase, segnala la funzione grammaticale della parola.
