Anchorite o anchoro significa qualcuno che, per motivi religiosi, si ritira dalla società secolare per poter condurre una vita fortemente orientata alla preghiera, ascetica e circostanze, permettendo vita eucaristica. Mentre gli anchoriti sono spesso considerati un tipo di eremita religiosa, a differenza degli eremiti, essi erano tenuti a prendere un voto di stabilità del luogo, optando invece per una chiusura permanente nelle cellule spesso collegate alle chiese. Anche a differenza degli eremiti, gli anchoriti erano soggetti a un rito religioso di consacrazione che somigliava molto al rito funebre, dopo di che - ideologicamente, almeno sarebbero considerati morti al mondo, un tipo di santo vivente. La vita anchoritica è una delle prime forme di vita monastica cristiana. È forse meglio conosciuto la testimonianza archeologica e letteraria della sua esistenza nell'Inghilterra medievale. Nella Chiesa cattolica romana oggi è una delle "altre forme di vita consacrata" e disciplinata dalle stesse norme della vita consacrata eremita.

Anchorite or anchoret denotes someone who, for religious reasons, withdraws from secular society so as to be able to lead an intensely prayer-oriented, ascetic, and—circumstances permitting—Eucharist-focused life. Whilst anchorites are frequently considered to be a type of religious hermit, unlike hermits they were required to take a vow of stability of place, opting instead for permanent enclosure in cells often attached to churches. Also unlike hermits, anchorites were subject to a religious rite of consecration that closely resembled the funeral rite, following which - ideologically, at least, they would be considered dead to the world, a type of living saint. The anchoritic life is one of the earliest forms of Christian monastic living. It is perhaps best known surviving archaeological and literary evidence of its existence in medieval England. In the Roman Catholic Church today it is one of the "Other Forms of Consecrated Life" and governed by the same norms as the consecrated eremitic life.
