L'ascetismo (/ əsɛtɪsɪz (ə) m /; dal greco: ἄσκησις áskēsis, "esercizio" o "formazione") è uno stile di vita caratterizzato dall'astinenza dai piaceri mondani, spesso perseguendo obiettivi spirituali. Molte tradizioni religiose, come l'Induismo, il Buddismo, il Jainismo e alcuni gruppi cristiani (ad esempio, i Padri del Deserto) comprendono pratiche che comportano una limitazione rispetto alle azioni del corpo, del discorso e della mente. I fondatori e primi praticanti di queste religioni hanno vissuto stili di vita estremamente austeri, rinunciando ai piaceri sensuali e all'accumulo di ricchezza materiale.
