Il termine "barbaro" si riferisce a una persona che si percepisce di essere incivile. Nozioni comparabili si trovano nelle civiltà extraeuropee, in particolare in Cina e Giappone. Nell'Impero Romano i Romani usavano la parola "barbaro" per molte persone, come Berbers, germanica, Celti, Cartaginesi, Iberici, Traci e persiani.
