L'aratura e la coltivazione di un terreno omogeneizza e modifica i 12 - 25 cm del suolo superiore per formare uno strato di aratro. In molti suoli, la maggior parte delle radici alimentatori di piante fine può essere trovata nello strato di terriccio o strato. Gli arachidi furono inizialmente alimentati all'uomo, ma il processo è diventato notevolmente più efficiente quando gli animali sono stati messi in servizio.
