Nella legge inglese, la prigionia è la limitazione della libertà di una persona. Il libro Termes de la Ley contiene la seguente definizione: L'imprigionamento non è altro che la limitazione della libertà di un uomo, sia in campo aperto, sia in magazzino, o in gabbia nelle strade o in una casa di un uomo , Così come nei comuni gaoli; E in tutti i luoghi il partito così limitato si dice che sia un prigioniero finché non ha la libertà di andare liberamente in tutti i luoghi in tutti i luoghi dove vuole senza clausura o in primavera o altrimenti.
