La lingua è la capacità umana di acquisire e utilizzare sistemi complessi di comunicazione, e una lingua è un esempio specifico di tale sistema. Lo studio scientifico del linguaggio è chiamato linguistica. Le stime del numero di lingue nel mondo variano da 6.000 a 7.000. Tuttavia, ogni stima precisa dipende da una distinzione parzialmente arbitraria tra lingue e dialetti. Le lingue naturali vengono pronunciate o firmate, ma ogni lingua può essere codificata in supporti secondari usando stimoli uditivi, visivi o tattili, ad esempio in scrittura grafica, braille o fischiamenti.
