Mead è una bevanda alcolica creata fermentando il miele con acqua e spesso frutta, spezie, cereali o luppolo. Il contenuto alcolico di mead può variare da circa 8% ABV a più del 20%. La caratteristica definente di mead è che la maggior parte dello zucchero fermentabile della bevanda deriva dal miele. Può essere ancora, carbonato o naturalmente frizzante, e può essere asciutto, semi-dolce o dolce. Mead è conosciuto da molte fonti di storia antica in tutta Europa, Africa e Asia. "Può essere considerato l'antenato di tutte le bevande fermentate", ha affermato Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat, "precedendo la coltivazione del suolo". Hornsey considera le prove archeologiche di ambiguità, tuttavia McGovern e altri chimici archeologici considerano la presenza di marcatori di cera d'api e di acido gluconico, in presenza di altre sostanze conosciute da fermentare, come prova ragionevolmente concreta dell'uso del miele in antiche bevande fermentate.
