Un surcoat, o surcote, era un indumento esterno comunemente indossato nel Medioevo da uomini e donne. Può riferirsi a un cappotto indossato sopra altri indumenti o l'indumento esterno di una persona. Il nome deriva dal significato francese "sopra la cotta", un lungo e largo cappotto che raggiunge i piedi senza maniche. A partire dal XII secolo, i cavalieri indossavano lunghi e scorrenti vesti sopra la loro armatura, che erano spesso impreziositi con le braccia del portatore. Di solito si estendevano fino a metà di vitello, avevano fessure nella parte anteriore e posteriore, e erano maniche o senza maniche. Gli storici ritengono che la pratica di indossare cappotti bianchi sia stata prelevata dai turchi durante le crociate e il loro scopo era quello di riflettere il calore, proteggendo così la posta dal sole diretto, che riscaldava la posta e il soldato all'interno. L'surcostato serve anche in aree di cattivo tempo per mantenere la pioggia e la battaglia lontano dalle catene leggermente corrose. L'omicida mostrò l'apparato di un cavaliere che lo identificava, che, con l'aumento del grande timone del tardo XII secolo e del primo XIII secolo, divenne sempre più cruciale.
