O espaço retroperitoneal ou simplesmente o retroperitoneum contém as estruturas anatômicas que se encontram atrás do abdômen e não são fechadas pelo abdômen. "Retroperitoneal" significa "por trás do peritoneu". A história do desenvolvimento é principalmente órgãos retroperitoneais e secundários retroperitoneais. Os órgãos retroperitoneais primários são os órgãos que se formam atrás da cavidade abdominal. Estes incluem rins, glândulas adrenais e ureteres. Em contraste, os órgãos retroperitoneais secundários são produzidos na cavidade abdominal: inicialmente são intraperitoneais, e esses órgãos são pressionados na parede abdominal, sendo o peritônio do peritônio ligado ao peritônio parietal da parede abdominal. Por conseguinte, não têm mesenteria e são severamente restritos na sua mobilidade em comparação com os órgãos que se situam por via intraperitoneal.

Man unterscheidet entwicklungsgeschichtlich primär retroperitoneal und sekundär retroperitoneale Organe. Primär retroperitoneal liegen jene Organe, die hinter der Bauchhöhle entstehen. Dazu gehören Nieren, Nebennieren und Harnleiter. Im Gegensatz dazu entstehen die sekundär retroperitonealen Organe in der Bauchhöhle: Sie liegen vorerst intraperitoneal, durch Wachstum werden diese Organe dann an die Bauchwand gedrückt, wobei deren Hülle, das Peritoneum viscerale, mit dem Peritoneum parietale der Bauchwand verwächst. Sie besitzen daher kein Gekröse mehr und sind in ihrer Beweglichkeit im Vergleich zu den intraperitoneal gelegenen Organen stark eingeschränkt.
