No contexto da bioquímica, a avidez refere-se à força acumulada de múltiplas afinidades de interacções de ligação não covalentes individuais, tais como entre um receptor de proteína e seu ligando e é comumente referido como afinidade funcional. Como tal, a avidez é distinta da afinidade, que descreve a força de uma única interação. No entanto, uma vez que os eventos de ligação individuais aumentam a probabilidade de outras interações ocorrerem, a avidez não deve ser considerada como a mera soma de suas afinidades constituintes, mas como o efeito combinado de todas as afinidades que participam da interação biomolecular. As biomoléculas geralmente formam complexos heterogêneos ou oligómeros homogêneos e multímeros ou polímeros.
