Brolga
O brolga, anteriormente conhecido como companheiro nativo, é um pássaro na família das gruas. Também recebeu o nome de guindaste australiano, um termo cunhado em 1865 pelo reconhecido artista ornitológico John Gould em seus Birds of Australia. O brolga é uma espécie comum e gregária de aves húmidas do Pacífico tropical e do sudeste da Austrália e da Nova Guiné, é um pássaro alto e ereto com uma cabeça pequena, bico longo, pescoço esbelto e pernas longas. A plumagem é principalmente cinza, com pontas de asa preta, e tem uma faixa de cor laranja-vermelha na cabeça. É bem conhecido por sua intrincada dança de acasalamento. O ninho é construído de varas em uma ilha na região pantanosa e geralmente dois ovos são colocados. A incubação leva 32 dias e os jovens recém-incubados são pré-cotidianos. A dieta adulta é principalmente matéria vegetal, mas os invertebrados e os vertebrados pequenos também são comidos. Embora o pássaro não seja considerado em perigo na maioria do seu alcance, as populações estão mostrando algum declínio, especialmente no sul da Austrália, e planos de ação locais estão sendo realizados em algumas áreas. É o emblema oficial de pássaros do estado de Queensland.
