Carnitina
Carnitina é um composto de amônio quaternário biosintetizado a partir dos aminoácidos lisina e metionina. Nas células vivas, é necessário para o transporte de ácidos graxos do espaço intermembranar nas mitocôndrias, na matriz mitocondrial durante a quebra de lipídios para a geração de energia metabólica. Está amplamente disponível como um suplemento nutricional. A carnitina foi originalmente encontrada como um fator de crescimento para lombrices e vitamina B rotulada, embora a carnitina não seja uma vitamina adequada. A carnitina existe em dois estereoisómeros: a sua forma biologicamente activa é a L-carnitina, enquanto o enantiómero, a D-carnitina, é biologicamente inativo.
