Códice
Um códice é um livro composto por várias folhas de papel, velino, papiro ou similar, com conteúdo escrito à mão, geralmente empilhados e encadernados pela fixação de uma borda e com tampas mais grossas do que as folhas, mas às vezes concerto e dobrada -estilo. A alternativa ao formato de códice paginado para um documento longo é o pergaminho contínuo. Exemplos de códices dobrados são os códices mayas. Às vezes, o termo é usado para um formato de estilo de livro, incluindo livros impressos modernos, mas excluindo livros dobrados. Desenvolvido pelos romanos a partir de comprimidos de escrita de madeira, a substituição gradual do pergaminho, a forma dominante do livro no mundo antigo, foi denominado o avanço mais importante da história do livro antes da invenção da impressão. O códice transformou completamente a forma do próprio livro e ofereceu uma forma que durou vários séculos. A disseminação do códice é freqüentemente associada ao surgimento do cristianismo, que adotou o formato para a Bíblia no início.
