Coma
Coma é um estado de inconsciência que dura mais de seis horas, em que uma pessoa: não pode ser despertada; não responde normalmente a estímulos, luz ou som dolorosos; falta um ciclo normal de sono-vigília; e, não inicia ações voluntárias. Uma pessoa em estado de coma é descrita como sendo comatosa. Uma pessoa comatosa exibe uma ausência completa de vigília e é incapaz de sentir, falar, ouvir ou se mover de forma consciente. Para um paciente manter a consciência, dois componentes neurológicos importantes devem funcionar. O primeiro é o córtex cerebral - a matéria cinzenta que cobre a camada externa do cérebro. O outro é uma estrutura localizada no tronco cerebral, denominada sistema de ativação reticular. A lesão de um ou de ambos os componentes é suficiente para que um paciente experimente um coma. O córtex cerebral é um grupo de "matéria cinzenta", denso e denso, composto do núcleo dos neurônios cujos axônios formam a "substância branca" e é responsável pela percepção, retransmissão da entrada sensorial através da via talâmica e muitos outras funções neurológicas, incluindo o pensamento complexo.
