Um cometa é um corpo gelado pequeno do Sistema Solar que, ao passar perto do Sol, se aquece e começa a sair, exibindo uma atmosfera visível ou coma, e às vezes também é uma cauda. Esses fenômenos são devidos aos efeitos da radiação solar e do vento solar sobre o núcleo do cometa. Os núcleos de cometas variam de algumas centenas de metros a dezenas de quilômetros e são compostos de coleções soltas de gelo, poeira e pequenas partículas rochosas. O coma e a cauda são muito maiores, e se suficientemente brilhante pode ser visto da Terra sem o auxílio de um telescópio. Os cometas foram observados e registrados desde tempos antigos por muitas culturas diferentes. Os cometas têm uma ampla gama de períodos orbitais, variando de vários anos a vários milhões de anos. Cometas de período curto originam-se no cinto de Kuiper ou no seu disco disperso associado, que está além da órbita de Netuno. Cometas do período mais longo são pensadas para originar-se na nuvem de Oort, uma nuvem esférica de corpos gelados que se estendem de fora do Cinturão de Kuiper até a metade da próxima estrela mais próxima. Os cometas de longo período são direcionados para o Sol a partir da nuvem de Oort por perturbações gravitacionais causadas por estrelas passageiras e a maré galáctica.
