Estuário
Um estuário é um corpo costeiro parcialmente fechado de água salobre com um ou mais rios ou córregos que fluem para ele e com uma conexão livre para o mar aberto. Os estuários formam uma zona de transição entre os ambientes dos rios e os ambientes marítimos e estão sujeitos a ambas as influências marinhas, como marés, ondas e afluxo de água salgada; e influências ribeirinhas, como fluxos de água doce e sedimentos. Os influxos de água do mar e água doce fornecem níveis elevados de nutrientes tanto na coluna de água como nos sedimentos, fazendo com que os estuários entre os habitats naturais mais produtivos do mundo. A maioria dos estuários existentes foram formados durante a época do Holoceno pela inundação de vales erosos ou glaciados quando o nível do mar começou a aumentar cerca de 10.000-12.000 anos atrás. Os estuários são tipicamente classificados por suas características geomorfológicas ou por padrões de circulação de água e podem ser referidos por muitos nomes diferentes, como baías, portos, lagoas, enseadas ou sons, embora algumas dessas massas de água não atendam estritamente a definição acima de um estuário e pode ser totalmente salgado.
