Um feedthrough é um condutor usado para transportar um sinal através de um gabinete ou placa de circuito impresso. Como qualquer condutor, tem uma pequena quantidade de capacitância. Um "capacitor de passagem" possui um valor mínimo garantido de capacitância de derivação incorporado e é usado para fins de derivação em aplicações de ultra-alta freqüência. Os avanços podem ser divididos em categorias de poder e instrumentação. As passagens de alimentação são usadas para transportar alta corrente ou alta tensão. As passagens de instrumentação são usadas para transportar sinais elétricos que normalmente são de baixa corrente ou tensão. Outro tipo especial é o que é comumente conhecido como RF-feedthrough, especificamente projetado para transportar sinais elétricos de RF de alta freqüência ou microondas. Uma conexão elétrica pode ter que suportar uma diferença de pressão considerável em todo o seu comprimento. Os sistemas que operam sob alto vácuo, como microscópios eletrônicos, requerem conexões elétricas através do recipiente de pressão. Da mesma forma, os veículos submersíveis requerem conexões de alimentação entre instrumentos e dispositivos externos e os controles dentro do casco da pressão do veículo.
