Christoph Willibald Gluck
Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck foi um compositor de ópera do período clássico inicial. Depois de muitos anos no tribunal de Habsburgo em Viena, Gluck trouxe a reforma prática das práticas dramatúrgicas da ópera que muitos intelectuais faziam campanha ao longo dos anos. Com uma série de novas obras radicais na década de 1760, entre elas Orfeo ed Euridice e Alceste, ele quebrou o estrangulamento que a ópera seria Metastasian tinha desfrutado durante grande parte do século. A forte influência da ópera francesa nestes trabalhos encorajou Gluck a se mudar para Paris, o que ele fez em novembro de 1773. Combinando as tradições da ópera italiana e do gênero nacional francês em uma nova síntese, Gluck escreveu oito óperas para os estágios parisienses. Um dos últimos, Iphigénie en Tauride, foi um grande sucesso e geralmente é reconhecido como seu melhor trabalho. Embora ele fosse extremamente popular e amplamente creditado com a revolução da ópera francesa, o domínio de Gluck sobre a cena de ópera parisiense nunca foi absoluto, e depois da pouca recepção de seu Echo et Narcisse deixou Paris com desgosto e voltou para Viena para viver o resto de sua vida.
