A hegemonia é uma forma indireta de governo e de domínio imperial em que o hegemon regra estados subordinados geopolíticamente pelo meio de poder implícito, a ameaça de força e não a força militar direta. Na Grécia antiga, a hegemonia denotou o domínio politico-militar de uma cidade-estado sobre outras cidades-estados. No século 19, a hegemonia indicava a predominância geopolítica e cultural de um país sobre os outros; do qual o hegemonismo derivado, a política do Grande Poder significava estabelecer a hegemonia européia na Ásia continental e na África. No século 20, Antonio Gramsci desenvolveu a filosofia e a sociologia da hegemonia geopolítica na teoria da hegemonia cultural, segundo a qual uma classe social pode manipular o sistema de valores e costumes de uma sociedade, para criar e estabelecer uma classe dominante Weltanschauung, uma visão de mundo que justifica o status quo da dominação burguesa das outras classes sociais da sociedade.
