Mayflies ou shadflies são insetos pertencentes à ordem Ephemeroptera (do grego εφημερος, ephemeros = "short-lived" (literalmente "duradoura por dia" "diariamente" ou "dia-longo"), πτερον, pteron = "wing", referindo para o breve período de vida dos adultos). Eles foram colocados em um antigo grupo de insetos denominados Palaeoptera, que também contém libélulas e damselflies. São insetos aquáticos cujo estágio imaturo (chamado "naiad" ou, coloquialmente, "ninfa") geralmente dura um ano em água doce. Os adultos são de curta duração, de alguns minutos a alguns dias, dependendo da espécie. Cerca de 2.500 espécies são conhecidas em todo o mundo, incluindo cerca de 630 espécies na América do Norte. As naiades vivem principalmente em riachos sob rochas, vegetação em decomposição ou no sedimento. Poucas espécies vivem em lagos, mas estão entre as mais prolíficas.
