A Melbourne Cup é a principal corrida de cavalos de puro sangue da Austrália. Comercializada como "a raça que pára uma nação", é uma corrida de 3.200 metros para crianças de três anos e mais. É a desvantagem mais rica "duas milhas" do mundo, e uma das mais ricas corridas do território. Conduzido anualmente pelo Victoria Racing Club no Flemington Racecourse em Melbourne, Victoria, o evento começa às 15h na primeira terça-feira de novembro. A primeira corrida foi realizada em 1861 ao longo de duas milhas, mas foi encurtada para 3.200 metros em 1972, quando a Austrália adotou o sistema métrico. Isso reduziu a distância em 18.688 metros, e o recorde de 1968 da Rain Lover de 3min.19.1sec foi ajustado para 3min.17.9sec. O atual detentor de registro é o Kingston Rule de 1990, com um tempo de 3min 16.3sec.
