A temperatura é uma medida numérica de quente e frio. Sua medição é por detecção de radiação de calor, velocidade de partículas, energia cinética ou, mais comumente, pelo comportamento em massa de um material termométrico. Pode ser calibrado em qualquer uma das várias escalas de temperatura, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, etc. As medições com um pequeno termómetro ou a detecção de radiação de calor podem mostrar que a temperatura de um corpo de material pode variar de tempos em tempos e de lugar para colocar dentro dele. Se as mudanças acontecem muito rápido, ou com um espaçamento muito pequeno, dentro de um corpo, pode ser impossível definir sua temperatura. Assim, o conceito de temperatura em geral tem um conteúdo empírico. Dentro de um corpo que troca nenhuma energia ou matéria com seus arredores, a temperatura tende a tornar-se espacialmente uniforme à medida que o tempo passa. Quando um caminho permeável apenas ao calor é aberto entre dois corpos, a energia sempre se transfere espontaneamente como o calor de um corpo mais quente para o mais frio. A taxa de transferência depende da natureza do caminho. Se eles estão conectados por um caminho permeável apenas ao calor, e nenhum fluxo de calor entre eles, então os dois corpos são igualmente quentes.
