Zea (gênero)
Zea é um gênero de gramíneas verdadeiras na família Poaceae. Várias espécies são comumente conhecidas como teosintes e são encontradas no México, na Guatemala e na Nicarágua. Existem cinco espécies reconhecidas no gênero: Zea diploperennis, Zea perennis, Zea luxurians, Zea nicaraguensis e Zea mays. A última espécie é ainda dividida em quatro subespécies: huehuetenangensis, mexicana, parviglumis e mays. As três primeiras subespécies são teosintes; O último é o milho, ou o milho, o único taxão domesticado no gênero Zea. As espécies são agrupadas em duas seções, seção. Luxuriantes, com as quatro primeiras espécies, e a seita. Zea com Zea mays. A seção anterior é tipificada por botões de manchas escuras constituídos por heterocromatina que são terminais na maioria dos braços cromossômicos, enquanto a maioria das subespécies de seita. Zea pode ter 0 a 3 botões entre cada extremidade do cromossomo e o centrómero e muito poucos botões de terminal. As duas plantas perenes são pensadas para ser uma espécie por alguns.
