Monotype-ul este un jig, inventat în 1897 de inginerul american Tolbert Lanston. Spre deosebire de mașina de setare Linotype, procesele de setare și turnare nu sunt combinate într-o singură mașină. Neben der beschriebenen normalen Monotype-Gießmaschine, gab es noch die Monotype-Supra, eine Komplettgießmaschine für Großkegel-Schriften von 14 bis 72 Punkt Schriftgröße. Durch Umbauten war sie auch für den Guss von Blindmaterial, Regletten, Linien und Unterlegstegen einsetzbar. Der erste sogenannte Typ A wurde in Europa kaum eingesetzt, erst der Typ C und ab 1910 der Typ D sorgten für die große Verbreitung.
