Ablația este îndepărtarea materialului de pe suprafața unui obiect prin vaporizare, tăiere sau alte procese erozive. Exemple de materiale ablative sunt descrise mai jos și includ materialul navei spațiale pentru reintrare în atmosferă, gheață și zăpadă în glaciologie, țesuturi biologice în medicină și materiale pasive de protecție împotriva incendiilor.
