Strămoş
Un strămoș sau preot este un părinte sau părinte al unui strămoș. Strămoșul este "orice persoană de la care se coboară. În drept, persoana de la care moștenirea a fost moștenită". Două persoane au o relație genetică dacă unul este strămoșul celuilalt sau dacă au un strămoș comun. În teoria evoluționistă, se spune că speciile care împărtășesc un strămoș evolutiv sunt de origine comună. Cu toate acestea, acest concept de origine nu se aplică anumitor bacterii și altor organisme capabile de transferul orizontal al genei. Presupunând că toți strămoșii unui individ nu au nici o legătură între ei, acel individ are doi strămoși în cea de-a cincea generație anterioară și un total de aproximativ 2g + 1 strămoși în generațiile de dinaintea lui. În practică, totuși, este clar că marea majoritate a strămoșilor oamenilor sunt multipli legați. Luați în considerare n = 40: specia umană are o vechime de peste 40 de generații, însă numărul 240, aproximativ 1012 sau un triliu, scade numărul de oameni care au trăit vreodată.
