Augustin de Hippo
Augustin de Hippo, cunoscut și ca Sfântul Augustin sau Sfântul Austin, a fost un teolog și filosof creștin timpuriu ale cărui scrieri au avut un mare impact asupra dezvoltării creștinismului occidental și a filosofiei occidentale. Episcop de Hipo Regius, aflat în provincia romană din Africa. Scriind în timpul epocii patristice, el este privit ca unul dintre cei mai importanți părinți ai Bisericii din Occident. Printre cele mai importante lucrări ale sale se numără Orașul lui Dumnezeu și Confesiunile, care continuă să fie citite pe scară largă astăzi. Conform contemporanului său, Jerome, Augustin "a stabilit din nou vechea credință". În primii săi ani, el a fost puternic influențat de maniheism și apoi de neoplatonismul lui Plotin. După convertirea sa la creștinism și botezul său în 387, Augustin și-a dezvoltat propria abordare a filosofiei și teologiei, adaptând o varietate de metode și perspective. Crezând că harul lui Hristos era indispensabil libertății umane, el a contribuit la formularea doctrinei păcatului original și a contribuit semnificativ la dezvoltarea teoriei războiului just.
