Fagul este un gen de copaci de foioase din familia Fagaceae, originară în Europa temperată, Asia și America de Nord. Sistemele recente de clasificare a genului recunosc zece până la treisprezece specii în două subgeneri distincte, Engleriana și Fagus. Subgenul Engleriana se găsește numai în Asia de Est și se deosebește în mod deosebit de subgenul Fagus prin faptul că aceste bușteni sunt copaci cu ramificație redusă, adesea alcătuită din mai multe trunchiuri majore cu coajă gălbuie. Alte caracteristici de diferențiere includ înflorirea albicioasă de pe partea inferioară a frunzelor, venele vizibile ale frunzelor terțiare și un peduncul lung și neted al cupolei. Fagus japonica, Fagus engleriana și specia F. okamotoi, propuse de bunganistul Chung-Fu Shen în 1992, cuprind acest subgen. Cele mai cunoscute fagusuri de subgenus Fagus sunt ramificații înalte, cu trunchiuri înalte, trunchiuri și coajă gri-argintiu. Acest grup include Fagus sylvatica, Fagus grandifolia, Fagus crenata, Fagus lucida, Fagus longipetiolata și Fagus hayatae.

Prima definiție a fagului în dicționar este orice arbore N temperat din genul Fagus, esp F. sylvatica din Europa, având coaja cenușie netedă: familia Fagaceae. O altă definiție a fagului este orice copac al genului Nothofagus, din Australasia temperată și din America de Sud. De asemenea, fagul este lemnul tare al oricarui dintre acești copaci, folosit la fabricarea mobilierului etc.
