Rasă
O rasă este un grup specific de animale domestice sau plante cu aspect omogen, comportament omogen sau alte caracteristici care o deosebesc de alte animale sau de plante din aceeași specie și care au fost obținute prin reproducere selectivă. În ciuda centralizării ideii de "rase" la creșterea animalelor, nu există o definiție acceptată științific a termenului. O rasă nu este, prin urmare, o clasificare obiectivă sau verificabilă din punct de vedere biologic, ci este un termen de artă între grupurile de crescători care împărtășesc un consens în ceea ce privește calitățile care fac ca anumiți membri dintr-o anumită specie să fie membri ai unui subset numit. Termenul se deosebește de landrace, care se referă la o varietate regională de animale domestice prin reproducere relativ necontrolată. Atunci când sunt crescuți împreună, animalele din aceeași rasă transmit aceste trăsături previzibile către descendenții lor, iar această abilitate - cunoscută drept "reproducere adevărată" - este o cerință pentru o rasă. Rasele de plante sunt mai des cunoscute sub denumirea de soiuri.
