Byte / baɪt / este o unitate de informație digitală în calcul și telecomunicații care constă cel mai frecvent în opt biți. Din punct de vedere istoric, octetul a fost numărul de biți folosiți pentru a codifica un singur caracter de text într-un calculator și, din acest motiv, este cea mai mică unitate adresabilă de memorie în multe arhitecturi de calculatoare. Mărimea octetului a fost în trecut dependentă de hardware și nu există standarde definitive care să mandateze mărimea. Standardul de facto al opt biți este o putere convenabilă de două, permițând valorile 0 până la 255 pentru un octet. Standardul internațional IEC 80000-13 a codificat acest sens comun. Un octet de unitate a fost definit pentru a denumi explicit o secvență de 8 biți din cauza ambiguității asociate la acel moment cu octetul.
