Puiul sau chigo-ul chigo este un artropod parazitar găsit în majoritatea climatelor tropicale și subtropicale, pentru a nu fi confundat cu forma larvară a Trombiculidae găsită în climă mai temperată. Este nativ din America Centrală și de Sud și a fost introdusă din greșeală de către oameni în Africa sub-sahariană. La 1 mm lungime, puricea chigo este cea mai mică pură cunoscută. Chigo-urile de reproducere se aruncă în pielea expusă pe picioarele mamiferelor și rămân acolo timp de două săptămâni în timp ce dezvoltă ouă, timp în care se umflă dramatic, provocând uneori iritații intense. După acest punct, leziunea pielii arată ca un blister de 5 până la 10 mm cu un punct central negru, care sunt picioarele posterioare expuse puricii, spiralele respiratorii și organele de reproducere. Dacă puricea este lăsată în interiorul pielii, pot apărea complicații periculoase, inclusiv infecții secundare, pierderea unghiilor și deformarea picioarelor. Acestea sunt relativ rare, dar infestațiile grele, combinate cu condiții nesanitare, sporesc foarte mult probabilitatea complicațiilor. Pula parazitară trăiește în sol și nisip și se hrănește intermitent pe gazdele cu sânge cald, cum ar fi oamenii, bovinele, oile, câinii, șoarecii și alte animale.
