Comunismul este un sistem socio-economic structurat pe proprietatea comună a mijloacelor de producție și caracterizat de absența claselor, a banilor și a statului; precum și o ideologie și o mișcare socială, politică și economică care urmărește să stabilească această ordine socială. Mișcarea de a dezvolta comunismul, în interpretările sale marxist-leniniste, a influențat în mod semnificativ istoria secolului al XX-lea, care a văzut o rivalitate intensă între statele comuniste din blocul de est și cele mai dezvoltate state capitaliste ale lumii occidentale. Comunismul a fost dezvoltat pentru prima dată într-o teorie științifică de către filosoful german și om de știință socială Karl Marx, iar înțelegerea colectivă a acestei abordări științifice este cunoscută astăzi ca marxism. În înțelegerea marxistă, comunismul este punctul final al evoluției sociale a omului, care va deveni în mod inevitabil realizabil prin progresele economice și sociale ale socialismului.
