O societate este o entitate juridică separată care a fost încorporată fie direct prin legislație, fie printr-un proces de înregistrare stabilit prin lege. Entitățile încorporate au drepturi și obligații legale distincte de angajații și acționarii lor și pot desfășura afaceri fie ca o afacere care caută profit, fie ca o afacere non-profit. Entitățile încorporate timpuriu au fost înființate prin acte charter. Majoritatea jurisdicțiilor permit în prezent crearea de noi corporații prin înregistrare. Societățile înregistrate au personalitate juridică și sunt deținute de acționari a căror răspundere este limitată la investiția lor.
