From earlier croisade, from Old French crois cross, from Latin crux; influenced also by Spanish cruzada, from cruzar to take up the cross.

Cruciadele au fost campanii militare sancționate de Biserica Latino-Catolică Latină în Evul Mediu Înalt și în Evul Mediu târziu. În 1095, Papa Urban al II-lea a proclamat Prima Cruciadă cu scopul declarat de a restabili accesul creștin la locuri sfinte din și în apropierea Ierusalimului. Mulți istorici și unii dintre cei implicați la vremea respectivă, precum Saint Bernard de Clairvaux, dau precedență egală altor campanii militare pacte sancționate, întreprinse dintr-o varietate de motive religioase, economice și politice, cum ar fi cruciada albigensiană, cruciada aragoneză, reconquista și cruciadele de nord. În urma primei cruciade a avut loc o luptă intermitentă de 200 de ani pentru controlul Țării Sfinte, cu șase cruciade majore și numeroasele minore. În 1291, conflictul sa încheiat în eșec cu căderea ultimei cetăți creștine din Țara Sfântă de la Acre, după care Europa Romano-Catolică nu a mai făcut nici un răspuns coerent în est.
Definiția crusade în dicționarul Engleză
