Devalorizarea în politica monetară modernă este o reducere a valorii unei monede cu privire la acele bunuri, servicii sau alte unități monetare cu care această monedă poate fi schimbată. "Devalorizare" înseamnă scăderea oficială a valorii monedei unei țări în cadrul unui sistem de curs valutar fix, prin care autoritatea monetară stabilește oficial o nouă rată fixă în raport cu o monedă de referință străină. În schimb, deprecierea este folosită pentru a descrie o scădere a valorii unei valute datorită forțelor pieței, nu acțiunilor guvernamentale sau ale băncii centrale. În cadrul celui de-al doilea sistem, băncile centrale mențin ratele în sus sau în jos prin cumpărarea sau vânzarea de valută străină, de obicei, dar nu întotdeauna USD.
