În geometrie, diametrul unui cerc este orice segment de linie dreaptă care trece prin centrul cercului și ale cărui puncte finale se află pe cerc. Poate fi definit și ca cea mai lungă coardă a cercului. Ambele definiții sunt valabile și pentru diametrul unei sfere. Cuvântul "diametru" este derivat din diametrul grecesc, "diametrul unui cerc", de la di-, "peste, prin" + μεττρον, "măsură". Este adesea abreviat DIA, dia, d sau ⌀. În utilizarea mai modernă, lungimea unui diametru este numită și diametrul. În acest sens se vorbește mai degrabă despre diametru decât despre diametru, deoarece toate diametrele unui cerc sau sferă au aceeași lungime, aceasta fiind de două ori raza r. Pentru o formă convexă în plan, diametrul este definit a fi cea mai mare distanță care poate fi formată între două linii paralele opuse tangente la limita sa, iar lățimea este definită ca fiind cea mai mică distanță. Ambele cantități pot fi calculate eficient utilizând etriere rotative.
