Stratul de difracție
În optică, o rețea de difracție este o componentă optică cu o structură periodică, care împarte și difrazează lumina în mai multe fascicule care călătoresc în diferite direcții. Direcțiile acestor fascicule depind de distanța dintre grătare și lungimea de undă a luminii, astfel încât grătarul să acționeze ca element dispersant. Din acest motiv, grătarele sunt utilizate în mod obișnuit în monochromatori și spectrometre. Un diapozitiv fotografic cu un model fin de linii purpurii formează o grătare complexă. Pentru aplicații practice, grătarele au, în general, crestături sau hotărâri pe suprafața lor, mai degrabă decât linii întunecate. Aceste grătare pot fi fie transmisive, fie reflectante. Se produc, de asemenea, grilaje care modulează faza mai degrabă decât amplitudinea luminii incidente, frecvent utilizând holografia. Principiile grilajelor de difracție au fost descoperite de James Gregory, aproximativ un an după experimentele de prism ale lui Newton, inițial cu artefacte cum ar fi pene de pasăre. Prima grila de difracție făcută de om a fost făcută în jurul anului 1785 de către inventatorul Philadelphia David Rittenhouse, care a strâns fire de păr între două șuruburi cu filet fin.
