Divergenţă
În calculul vectorial, divergența este un vector vector care măsoară magnitudinea sursei sau chiuvetei unui vector vectorial într-un anumit punct, în termeni de un scalar semnat. Din punct de vedere tehnic, divergența reprezintă densitatea volumică a fluxului exterior al unui câmp vectorial dintr-un volum infinitezimal în jurul unui punct dat. De exemplu, luați în considerare că aerul este încălzit sau răcit. Câmpul vectorial relevant pentru acest exemplu este viteza aerului în mișcare într-un punct. Dacă aerul este încălzit într-o regiune, acesta se va extinde în toate direcțiile, astfel încât câmpul de viteză să indice în afară din acea regiune. Prin urmare, divergența câmpului de viteză în acea regiune ar avea o valoare pozitivă, deoarece regiunea este o sursă. Dacă aerul se răcește și contractează, divergența are o valoare negativă, deoarece regiunea este o chiuvetă.
