Ulm
Elms sunt copaci de foioase și semi-foioase care cuprind genul Ulmus din familia de plante Ulmaceae. Genul a apărut pentru prima oară în perioada geologică miocenică cu aproximativ 20 de milioane de ani în urmă, provenind din Asia Centrală. Acești copaci au înflorit și s-au răspândit pe cea mai mare parte a emisferei nordice, locuind în regiunile temperate și tropicale-montane din America de Nord și Eurasia, care se îndrepta spre sud, de-a lungul Ecuatorului, în Indonezia. Elms sunt componente ale mai multor tipuri de păduri naturale; în secolele XIX și începutul secolului al XX-lea, multe specii și soiuri au fost plantate și ca arbori ornamentali de stradă, grădină și parc din Europa, America de Nord și părți din emisfera sudică, în special Australasia. Unele lamne individuale au atins dimensiunile și vârsta. Cu toate acestea, în ultimele decenii, cele mai adânci lumeni de origine europeană sau nord-americană au murit din cauza maladiei olandeze, cauzată de un microfungus dispersat de gândacii de coajă. Ca răspuns, soiuri rezistente la boli au fost dezvoltate, capabile să restaureze ulmul în silvicultură și peisagistică.
